FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH DEBT YOU OWE

One of the first steps I took to repair my credit score was to total up all of the various debts I owed and the minimum payments on each. Although a late payment hadn’t previously seemed like a big deal, what I didn't realize is that a mistake that small can stay on my credit report for up to seven years! Knowing that it was crucial for me to begin making payments, I made the calls to set up payment plans as soon as possible. One of the most important things I learned through this process was never to be afraid to ask for help. If you’re a single parent, there are programs out there that you may qualify for that can help you in paying back bills based on income! I began with the minimums and started making payments to pay off whatever bills I could. Even though I still have some way to go in repaying my debts, I’m at a much better place than I was even a year ago.

MAKE A BUDGET

The credit repair industry has grown exponentially in recent years, therefore creating a plethora of fact vs. fiction information. People need to be educated that errors can and need to be fixed.  Going forward, I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made and I want to ensure that my families credit never gets back to the place where it was. The most successful way I’ve found to keep my family on track is through a budget. At the beginning of every month, Ben & I sit down to allocate our funds into various categories including bills, charity, food, clothing, transportation; etc. This helps us focus on spending our money on things we genuinely need vs. the things that want.

I want you to know that although improving your credit score may take time, it can be done. I can speak from personal experience, as I’m still in the process of recovering mine. Every consumer has the right to good credit and the law is on their side to help them fix mistakes.
