Winter Skincare Tips to Combat the Cold!
The cold weather has been hitting us so hard these past few days! My skin was the first to notice the temperature change and it is not taking it well! To bring things back into balance, I’ve been breaking out my tried and true favorite tips. If your skin needs a little TLC after these bitter cold days, check out my tricks below!
Fill up the humidifier
The cold temperatures are taking all of that good moisture out of the air, so a humidifier will help put it right back. Your itchy and dry skin will thank you!
Oils, creams, lotions + more
Oils, creams, and lotions are necessary ALL year round, but they are going to be your best friend when dealing with dry winter skin. Finding the perfect one may not be easy, but yours is out there! Don’t settle for any old moisturizer, either. Always do a little research first, before putting anything on your skin. Check out these options if you’re not sure where to get started! Turn down the hot water
Those extra hot showers that we all love need to be turned down when the weather gets cold. As hard as it may be when we want to warm up with a nice shower, that hot water is draining your skin of its natural oils that keep it moisturized.
Go fragrance-free
Lotions are necessary to keep the skin looking and feeling soft - but all of that can be for nothing if the product includes fragrances! From your lotions to your body washes, a fragrance can irritate the skin and even dry it out more.
Lotion during the “golden time”
When you moisturize matters, too! Right when you step out of the shower and your skin is still damp is the perfect time to lather up. Don’t touch that bathroom door though! Keep the moisture in the room and use your lotion in there.
Moisture from the inside out
If you feel like doing everything right and your skin is still struggling, take a look at your water intake. “Moisturizing” from the inside out can help plump up the skin and reduce the dry feeling. Seriously, drink your water!!
Sunscreen is a must!
Even when the sun isn't shining, you still need an SPF! Those UVA rays are hitting us year round, so protection is a must. No skin damage is allowed here!
Before bed lather
If it’s time to go to bed, grab your thickest cream and do a little before bed skin TLC. While you’re sleeping, your skin is going to work restoring itself. Lathering up before bed will give you a glow in the morning that you never knew was possible!
Check the ingredients
Before you start putting anything in your cart, check the ingredient list! Stay away from products that list alcohol as one of the top ingredients because that can be extremely drying for the skin. Instead, I like to look for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and AHAs!
Be mindful of your foods
What goes into your body will show on your skin. If you’re choosing nutrient-rich foods, than your skin will more happy! Sweet potatoes, avocados, and green tea, for example, all have nutrients that benefit the skin. A quick google search can change your skin for the better!
Slow down the physical exfoliation
Trust me - I know how badly you want to exfoliate all of that dry skin away! Unfortunately, over-exfoliating your skin can lead to small tears that allow bacteria in. It also irritates your already sensitive skin, causing more dryness in the end. Be extra gentle with a warm wash cloth if some exfoliation is needed. Otherwise, the world of chemical exfoliation is waiting for you!
Are you suffering through this cold with dry skin, too? It can be so painful and make the entire season feel like it’s dragging on. Adopting even a few of these tips can change your skin for the better this winter!
